History of Sweenys

Sweeny's Bar is the longest established family business in Ballyshannon - Alan Sweeny and Colleen Whelan met in Galway while studying hotel management and having later worked together in hotels, bars and restaurants in Germay, Italy, the Carribean, New Jersy, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Texas and Colorado they returned to Ballyshannon and took over the reins of Sweeny's White Horse Bar in 2001. Alan is the fourth generation of Sweenys to serve behind the counter in Ballyshannon.

In 2005 Alan and Colleen extended the bar on the ground floor and added and upstairs restaurant and function room to the premises. Sweeny's now caters for weddings, functions and all kinds of private parties as well as serving Good Food All Day.

Drop in for a quiet pint or join us for a night on the town. Whatever brings you to Sweeny's, your comfort and enjoyment is our priority.

Good Food Served All Day

Our emphasis in the kitchen is on sourcing local meats and produce and preparing them innovatively but with a healthy respect for tradition. Ballyshannon Chefs; Emma Sheerin and Shelly Matthews cook up fine homemade signature starters and main courses and John Sweeny delights those with a sweet tooth with his famous delicious desserts!

We serve food from 12 noon to 9.00pm Tuesday to Sunday.

Private Parties

With many memorable Dinner Dances, Weddings, Christenings, Anniverseraries and Birthday Parties under our belt we look foraward to catering to many more happy occasions in the future.

Private parties are arranged to suit your particular tastes. All kinds of menus are available and we can arrange DJs or Bands to make it a perfect night. Just call in and talk to Alan Sweeny.

We are also available in times of bereavement to cater for your after funeral requirements.

Where proud traditions fuse with contemporary tastes

Sweeny's has a traditional pub feel at its core, with the open turf fire, old drinks mirrors and many pub relics from a by-gone era. This however is fused with a contemporary atmosphere that makes Sweeny's a unique pub truly worth a regular visit.
